Bay Area School Districts Monitor Delta Variant Amid Conflicting Reopening Guidelines

Oakland, Calif. (KGO) – The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children over the age of 2 wear a mask at school, regardless of their immunization status. This contradicts the CDC’s recommendation that vaccinated students, teachers and staff do not need to wear masks.

This is because the delta variants continue to spread across the country.

Last Friday, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky released a powerful statement.

“It is becoming an unvaccinated pandemic,” Warensky said.

Unvaccinated children include children under 12, as the vaccine has not yet been approved for this age group.

Olivia Udovic is Auckland’s mother and teacher. Her youngest child will be 12 in September.

“She has a month before to get the vaccine,” Udvich said. “Maybe I should stay home this month just in case, but I think she’s leaving.”

The Auckland Education Association will begin negotiations with the district tomorrow, but do not anticipate any changes that could delay the start of the school year.

Auckland classrooms are equipped with an air filtration system and testing is underway.

Relationship: CDC says vaccinated teachers allow students to go outside without masks

Chaz Garcia of the teachers’ union says it’s important to persuade more people to get vaccinated.

“I think it’s important to allow trusted people in the vaccinated community to connect with the community,” Garcia said.

In Berkeley today, a small group of protesters called for distance learning to continue for some families until everyone is vaccinated, but the proposal was rejected by Congress.

“We have no intention of giving the district the ability to do distance education, and that authority expired on June 30,” said Phil Ting, a representative from San Francisco.

Relationship: Renaissance of interior masking? Bay Area health officials say the Delta variant is on the rise.

Meanwhile, as delta variants spread, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends masks for everyone in school, regardless of vaccination status.

Oakland Unified and other Bay Area school districts already made that decision earlier this month.

Auckland Unified spokesperson John Sasaki said:

The first day of school in Auckland is August 9.
