Some universities and colleges in the North Dakota university system use a portion of federal higher education emergency relief funds to reward students who get vaccinated.
Seven schools in the system are giving students $ 100 on Friday for providing proof of vaccination.
At Minot State, students who take at least one on-campus course are eligible for the $ 100 check.
Kevin Harmon, vice president of student affairs, said the university believes the program has been successful in increasing the number of students vaccinated. He said there were about 500 registered.
âQuite honestly our baseline, you know, without having required it before, there was really no point in submitting it,â Harmon said. âHowever, we had roughly over 100 registered in August. “
He said it is important for students to be vaccinated as it helps reduce the number of cases and keep students in class.
âThey can still try to participate virtually, but it’s just not the same. You know, if you have to spend a week to three weeks away from the classroom, it’s not productive for a student. It’s hard enough being a student, yet not being able to attend class, âsaid Harmon.
Minot State rookie Madalyn Meagher said she got the shot after she and her family caught the virus.
âI thought to myself that after everything that had happened, I had to get the vaccine to prevent this from happening again,â Meagher said. “And just so I can feel more secure hanging out with my friends and going to school.”
Meagher said she saw the $ 100 vaccine incentive in the weekly update and submitted her evidence.
She said if she wasn’t already vaccinated, the reward would have motivated her to do so – and now she hopes that will influence others as well.
âObviously everyone has their own opinion on vaccination,â Meagher said. “But, for those who might be on the verge of considering getting the vaccine, it might just help them go ahead and do it.”
Minot State students have until October 22 to submit proof of vaccination and they can do so on the Student Portal.
The deadline for submitting proof of vaccination differs among colleges and universities in the state.
